When viewing Patch information in Program and Features Installed Updates the version and publisher details are sometimes not displayed.
Cause
This issue is related to 32 and 64bit machines.
- If a 32bit Installer and its Patch is installed onto a 32bit machine - the version and publisher name is displayed.
- If a 32bit Installer and its Patch is installed onto a 64bit machine - the version and publisher name is NOT displayed
- If a 64bit Installer and its Patch is installed onto a 64bit machine - the version and publisher name is displayed.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{GUID}
(Where the GUID is the ProductCode of the installer)
It is this registry key which contains the information for the "Program and Features"\"Installed Updates" view. It appears that on 64bit machines Windows only ever looks at the 64bit registry location for the patch information ie.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{GUID}
Resolution
The best approach would be to ensure that you are building 64bit installers if you are targeting 64bit machines.
An alternative solution could be to copy the 32bit registry key to the 64bit registry location via a custom action within the installer- doing so the desired result of the Patch Version and Publisher name will be displayed for a 32bit installer on a 64bit machine.This should however be approached with extreme caution - this is not a tested or approved solution and would include a large cost to maintain.The registry data would need to be tracked down and removed for every uninstall, patch, minor and major upgrade so the information was not left orphaned on the machine. This may be particularly complicated if the Product Code (and therefore location of the registry) changes between versions.
If data is orphaned in the x64 section the patch can be uninstalled but the proper version is not reflected in the 'Add Remove Programs' menu or ?Uninstall/Change a program? menu. Meaning the orphaned data still reports the patch version is installed.
In addition the very act of including 64bit data within a 32bit installer would go against best practices.
