How to remove a merge module from a target machineSynopsis
This article will will discuss how a merge module can be removed from a target machine if it is no longer required in your Basic MSI installer.
Discussion
As applications evolve it may be apparent that a previously included merge module in your installer is no longer required. In such instances removing the merge module from your installer should also take into account removing it from the target machine as well.
The inclusion of a merge module into an installer means that all the contained files are "merged" into the MSI - If we remove it then this would be a prime candidate to create a Major Upgrade.
A Major Upgrade would uninstall all the files from the previous version of the installer (including the merge module) and reinstall the new version minus the merge module.

Additional Information
Whilst following the Major Upgrade solution is best practice to remove a Merge Module this does not guarantee its removal during the upgrade process.
If other application installed on the target machine also use the same Merge Module you may notice that rather than it being removed by the Major Upgrade the dll share count is decremented instead and the files remain in place. This is normal expected behaviour for shared files.
