In FlexNet Manager Suite, a user-based license may sometimes display “Unknown User” in the Consumption tab. This article explains what “Unknown User” means, why it appears, and steps you can take to resolve or prevent it.
What does “Unknown User” mean?
“Unknown User” does not mean that no one is using the device. Instead, it means the account logged into the device cannot be matched to a user record imported into FlexNet Manager.
Common reasons include:
- A local computer account (not a domain account) is used to log in.
- A domain account is used, but its details have not been imported into FlexNet Manager.
- A blacklisted account (such as Administrator) is used.
When this happens, FlexNet Manager cannot associate the device consumption with a known user, so it reports “Unknown User.”
How to avoid “Unknown User” appearing
- Remove unused software
- If the device is no longer in use, remove the relevant software.
- Run a new inventory scan followed by a full license reconcile import.
- This ensures fresh inventory data is captured.
- Mark unused assets as retired/disposed
- If the device is not in use but you prefer not to remove the software immediately, you can temporarily mark the asset as Retired or Disposed.
- After updating the asset status, run a reconcile-only import to refresh consumption data.
- Software on retired/disposed assets will no longer count toward license consumption.
- Ensure user logon activity is captured
- Verify that the expected user has logged into the machine at least once.
- If the inventory tool captures the last logon user, a new inventory scan and full reconcile import will correctly associate the device with that user instead of “Unknown User.”
