Symptoms

When building an InstallShield project, the following error may occur:

Error -5013: Internal build error.

Cause

This error has been known to occur in the following scenario.

If you have specified an Add/Remove Programs icon in the Add/Remove Programs section of the General Information view with a previous version of InstallShield and then upgraded the project, the build terminates halfway through with a -5013 internal error.

Express stores the path to an icon file in the ARPPRODUCTICON property. The Express build then creates a record in the Icon table because ARPPRODUCTICON needs to specify a foreign key in the icon table. The record in the icon table is not upgraded for the Add/Remove Programs icon when migrating from previous versions of InstallShield.

Resolution

This error can be resolved by making sure each shortcut referenced in the project has a valid icon file specified. To accomplish this, follow these steps:

1. Select the General Information view.
2. Scroll to the Add/Remove Programs section of the property sheet in the right panel.
3. Click the Display Icon property field and browse for a new display icon.
4. Select the Shortcuts/Folders view.
5. Select each shortcut and make sure it has a value in the Icon File property in the right panel.
6. Rebuild the release.
