When setting up a new deployment destination in Commander, you might notice that the Next button becomes available only when a cluster host is selected and not the cluster itself. This behavior typically occurs because the cluster is missing essential configuration required for automatic placement.
Clusters must have vSphere DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler) enabled to allow Commander deployments to select a host automatically.
To confirm:
- Open the vSphere client and navigate to the cluster settings page.
- Verify that DRS is enabled and set to Partially Automated or Fully Automated. These modes provide placement logic for host selection.
- If DRS is set to Manual, host placement logic does not exist. In such cases, you must select a specific host when creating a deployment destination in Commander, as the cluster cannot be targeted directly.
Outcome
Enabling vSphere DRS and configuring it appropriately allows Commander to target clusters for deployments without requiring manual host specification.
